When you're healthy, you're probably not thinking about coping with a serious illness. But that is the best time to consider the impact an illness could have on you, your family and your finances.
When you have Critical Illness cover in place, you have comfort knowing the following:
• a lump sum cash benefit to spend as you choose • freedom and choices regarding your treatment, care and recovery • financial independence during a difficult time • preservation of your home and investments
Critical illness cover is paid as a capital lump sum if the policy holder is diagnosed as critically ill (different policies cover different illnesses and accidents). It's important to stress the word diagnosed, so for example you only have to have a heart attack, not die from it. If you make a full recovery they don't ask for the money back! People are often confused at what exactly the difference is between critical illness cover and private health insurance. In short the latter only pays for the cost of medical treatment.
Critical illness cover can be taken out in addition to standard life insurance policies or they can be offered as a dual package. If you decide to go for the latter it's important to read the small print, as you may find that once a claim is made the remaining policy becomes void. On a practical note this could mean that a policy holder who has a stroke will receive a single pay-out, which effectively invalidates the ‘other bit' of their life insurance (and finding new cover after a stroke will be next to impossible). If you're in any doubt about the level of cover being offered; seek professional council.
Illnesses covered vary from provider to provider but this a list of the main ones. Alzheimer's Disease Angioplasty Aorta Graft Surgery Benign Brain Tumor Blindness Cancer (most malignant types) Coma Coronary Artery by-pass Surgery Deafness Heart Attack Heart Valve Replacement or Repair HIV/AIDS (named group only) Kidney Failure Loss of limbs Loss of speech Major Organ Transplant Motor Neurone Disease Multiple Sclerosis Paralysis/Paraplegia Parkinson's Disease Permanent and Total Disability Pre-senile dementia before age 65 Stroke Third Degree Burns Children's cover
A child becoming seriously ill may be unthinkable, but would you be able to cope financially if you or your partner had to give up work to look after your child? Children's cover aims to ease the financial burden at this difficult time by providing cover to either £15,000 or half your chosen sum assured at no extra cost.
Providers will often ask for a full personal and family medical history, as well as a medical, before they will agree to provide cover.
What are the possible consequences of not having this type of cover in place?
