It's a fact that the number of FTB's has dwindled more sharply over the last 5 years.

The problem for most FTB's is not paying the monthly mortgage payments but getting a big enough mortgage to buy even a starter home. Remember home ownership is still cheaper than renting in many cases, so although it can be very difficult don't be put off trying.
