If you are looking to move to Cheshire from out of the area you may find the following information useful.

Many years ago armies and invaders battled over this land. Go to the picturesque walled city of Chester, with its black and white building and extraordinary 14th century two-tiered rows of shops, and you will see reminders of the roman conquerors for whom this city was a fortress.

The largest Roman amphitheatre in the world has been excavated here - and you may even bump into a centurion! Every five years, in the shadow of Chester's 900 year old cathedral, 13th century mystery plays are performed, but there are daily 'performances' from Chester's flamboyant town crier.

At Styal, near Manchester, amid the clatter of looms, a Georgian cotton mill is working under water-power once more showing how 'King Cotton', which brought so much wealth to the region, was woven in the 19th century.

In nearby Macclesfield you visit the last surviving silk weaving factory in Europe, at Paradise Mill.

The network of canals that wend their way from town to city in the North Country are today given over to leisure and pleasure boats. But for centuries the canals, with feats of engineering, were alive with cargo barges carrying raw materials and finished goods. The world's largest collection of such narrowboats and barges is at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, where life aboard is recreated in detail.
